You Keep the Leash on, RIGHT?

So you’ve been thinking about an Epic Outdoor Pet Portrait Session, but you’re confused about how we only seem to do it with dogs who can be off-leash? Let there be no more confusion!
We live in Colorado for the mountains and the dogs and the mountain dogs! So if you have a mountain dog, but maybe they’re a little scatterbrained, or bolt at the sight of a squirrel, we would still love to get them to a beautiful vista for their portrait session - and keep them (and the squirrels) safe!

I love capturing the adventurous spirit of mountain dogs!

The Magic of Leash Removal

For your Epic Outdoor Session the studio will supply treats for bribing, tennis balls for fetching, and a 20 foot leash for action shots! We make sure to place the leash in a way that it’s easily retouched out of your favorite photos. The magic is the expression of freedom your dog will have in the final photographic artwork!

Retouching Doesn’t Stop There!

We don’t only retouch the leash. We check for eye boogies, slobber, and dander in all our studio photographs, as well as any background distractions like dead trees, houses, and other animals or humans in the outdoor photos.

Collar or Harness?

We encourage the use of a collar over a harness for outdoor photography, mainly for the ease of retouching out the leash. However, if you are more comfortable with the harness, or if the pup is still training, like Moose in the above photo, we will gladly photograph with a harness on. Moose looked like he was wearing a backpack and heading to his first day of school!

Preparing For Your Mountain Dog’s Outdoor Photo Shoot

Getting your beloved pooch prepared for an outdoor adventure photo shoot requires as much planning and creativity as would with a human subject. The key is to ensure that they are comfortable, cheerful, and feeling their best when the camera starts clicking. In this section, I'll guide you through practical tips to create beautiful memories of your dog in an outdoor setting.

Find Your Trail

On our Consultation phone call, we will guide you to selecting the spot to photograph in. If you have a favorite trail or vista, we can go there. If you and your dog enjoy hiking a mile to a specific spot, we’ll be ready! If you don’t have a specific place in mind, or if you’re not big into hiking, we have some easy-to-get-to places in our back pocket. Some of them have gorgeous mountain views right from the parking lot!

Grooming: We start with them clean…

A well-groomed pet makes excellent photos! But we all know what happens after some time playing in the dirt. So we begin the session with more “formal” portraits and end with running and playing. We suggest you get your pet groomed a day or two before the session, including a nail trim and fur trim around the eyes especially for those of a “scruffier” breed.

Training & Practice: Sit and Stay

Rarely is any animal perfectly trained, we work with pets of all behaviors and personalities. Past clients report being surprised at how amazing their photos turned out when they thought for sure their pet didn’t sit still enough. We need less than a second to get a great shot. And “bribing” your pet for sits and stays is our specialty. That being said, they’re in a new place with a new person to impress, so all bets are off during the session! And we totally understand that. We let them be their silly selves so we can capture the facets of their personality that make them so special.
