Pet Halloween Costumes!

It’s time to dress up your pet!

Are you looking for Halloween costume ideas for your dog or cat? We’ve got great examples of group costumes, and of course goofy, silly, scary, and adorable.
First, we’ll show you some backdrop ideas for your Pet Costume Photo Sessions!

Leaf Wreath!

Everyone LOVES this autumn leaves arrangement! We bought a foam core board and fabric leaves from the craft store, cut a hole big enough for a cat’s head to get through, then hot-glued the leaves to the board for a wreath of color! Lure your pet through the hole with a high-reward treat, and snap away! Now you have a fall-themed backdrop to use every year! Don’t forget to make a bigger one for the canine fam!

Lady the lab will save you!

This heroine will rescue you with her first aid and fire safety training! While this is a great example of a heroic costume for your pet, it is also a great example of what not to use on your autumn backdrop: HAY!
Hay is like glitter - it gets everywhere and and it sticks around. The pros are that it’s inexpensive and bio-degradable, but have fun retouching it out of every photo and then vacuuming only to realize you need to vacuum again… and again. And everywhere you take it it leaves a trail, so be ready to sweep from the car to the studio, that includes the hallway and the stairs. 2 years later there is still hay in my trunk. Pumpkins, mums, leaves, and cornstalks are all cleaner alternatives.

Finkle and Einhorn…..

If you’re thinking about group costumes, start with movies as your brainstorm prompt! For example, here we have Ace Ventura Pet Detective! Pick your favorite movie, dress the pet as the main character, and the humans as supporting roles, or vice versa. See more examples below!

Oho the UPS truck, it’s a - COMin down the street! Anyone remember that song from The Music Man? No? Just me? Ok…

This was my personal favorite from 2023’s Growloween at Three Dog Bakery! I wanted to thank this little guy for bringing me my delivery! You just can’t go wrong with the “front arm” costumes. (There’s gotta be a scientific name for these, right?)

GRRRRRRRR

Ah, the trusty Lion Costume! It’s very popular! One would think it’s easy to get it on one’s pet, but one might be wrong. We try every year to get a lion’s mane on our orange cat, and every year it stays on for about 1/500 of a second. Others have had better success, though. Last year there were 3 lions at Growloween and there was also one (paired with their human dressed as Dorothy) at the Edgewater Hometown Fest just last weekend.

Other popular costumes: cowboy, Eeyore, and bee.
