You’ve seen an earlier blog of Denver Locations for pet photography, which was a more general list. Here I’m going to dive into my favorite places to photograph your pets. These are locations you might hear me suggest when we are on our planning call. Some folks enjoy flat hikes, and some enjoy more elevation gain. Some like tree cover, some want the views that come with exposure. Depending on your and your pet’s activity level, we’ve got a location for everyone!

Understanding the Importance of Location for Pet Photography

When it comes to pet photography, the location can make a significant difference in the overall look and feel of the photographs. The right location can enhance the natural beauty of the pets and create a visually appealing backdrop. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a location:

Factors we Consider When Choosing a Location

1. Lighting: Since we shoot so close to sunset, we need to take into consideration where the higher ridges might block sunlight earlier than the lower areas. This is one reason that, as beautiful as it is, Red Rocks is not ideal for a sunset session. The sun goes behind the rocks much earlier than actual sunset, and we miss any colorful sunsets that might happen.

2. Background: Are there tons of trees to block the views of rolling mountains? Is the location only grass and sky and not much else? Or are there Aspens groves that will be bursting with Autumn color, and a lake that will play with a sunset’s reflection? We take all this into account when choosing a location for the most dynamic backdrops Colorado has to offer.

3. Safety: How crowded is the location? Is it popular for family photography? Are there concerts every night in the summer making it difficult to park? It may sound like I’m picking on Red Rocks, but I don’t meant to. There are many parks that can get crowded and not be an ideal place for a pet who gets distracted easily. So we head to the paths less traveled.

4. Accessibility: Will it take a mile hike on steep terrain to get to a beautiful spot? (I’m looking at you, Chief Mountain!) Or will it take just a couple steps out of the parking lot to have a mountainous vista? We can definitely choose a location like the summit of Chief Mountain, as long as you and your pet are accustomed to hiking long, steep, rocky terrain. If that’s not your jam, no problem! We have many locations that are level terrain and easily accessible.

Benefits of Outdoor Photography for Pets

Outdoor photography has numerous advantages for pet portraits. Firstly, pets tend to feel more relaxed and comfortable in natural environments, allowing their true personalities to shine through. Additionally, the variety of backdrops and textures in outdoor settings can add depth and interest to the photographs. Outdoor photography also provides opportunities for pets to interact with their surroundings, resulting in candid and playful shots.

Furthermore, outdoor locations offer ample space for pets to move around and explore, which can result in more dynamic and energetic images. Whether it's capturing your dog running through an open field or your cat climbing a tree, outdoor photography allows for a wider range of poses and actions.

Lastly, outdoor settings provide a sense of freedom and adventure for pets. They can experience new scents, sights, and sounds, which can bring out their natural curiosity and create memorable moments that can be captured in photographs.

Location 3: Heritage Belmar Park

Belmar Park, also known as Heritage Belmar (the name of the history park and museum), is a personal favorite of mine. My husband and I discovered it during pandemic times when we had just moved here and were exploring all the outdoor places we could find. We walked, biked, and bird-watched there, the whole summer of 2020. Now, the studio is practically a stone’s throw from the park, and it’s a convenient location for those who don’t feel the need to venture to the foothills.

The Charm of Belmar Park for Pet Photography

“One of the true jewels of the City of Lakewood park system, Belmar Park is a peaceful enclave in the center of town. At 132 rolling acres of natural grasslands and trees, the park offers nearly two miles of paved trails, over 17-acres of water, a creek and a wide variety of waterfowl and native plant communities.” - Lakewood.com

There is so much to see here, with Green Mountain and Mt Morrison in the background, the variety of nature is beyond compare.

The largest park in the Jeffco Open Space system, White Ranch Park has over 20 miles of multi-use trails over both gentle and rugged terrain, and boasts big-sky views of Denver.

Why White Ranch Park is a Top Choice for Pet Photography

White Ranch Park is another location where you don’t have to go far from the parking lot for gorgeous views. The hills across the valley gently slope into grassy fields. In the summer the tall grasses and wildflowers are abundant, and you can watch the sunset behind the mountains.
